“Demon Daughter”
When she was 12 she was raped and her narcissistic/histrionic mother blames her for the attack due to the way that she was dressed. Her right-wing mother goes into full swing, taking total control of her life, totally believing that now due to the rape she is now demon depressed. They misdiagnose trauma and depression as being demonic possession. Her church try to vanquish the demons and the depression that she now suffers in silence with no medical assistance, praying over her in tongues and trying to cast out the demons of depression and denying legal protection and recognized medical treatment.
Similar to “gay conversion therapy“ and “Boy Erased” they have her committed, forcing her into silence and the public health system. The girl, now a woman, is told that she has demons of they can see demons of all different colours inside her. Only her mother’s church and similar churches can see them. She is said that the church that she wants to join nearby, with normal professional people, has a giant demon hovering over it and thereby must be demonic. At the current time, the church is a sick place, pastors who know about crimes and who even know about pedophilia and murder, “Want God to deal with it” and say that “vengeance is the Lord’s” and should not be a part of the justice system. They are told to hide any crimes and to simply “forgive” the person. When harassed about demons she is warned to report the church and to “not touch God’s anointed.”
When her narcissistic, histrionic mother and a slimy male church pastor with no degree or critical thinking skills try to commit her as “collars on neck” reverends, they don’t speak about her demons, assault, they discuss that she has “spooked” them, and they discuss real things as delusions. Dark skinned, and without a boyfriend or family to protect, they shoo all friends and family away so that they are never caught and so that they maintain finances and control, they tell her that no man would ever want her, and don’t believe her about the rape because she is “not pretty enough to be assaulted.” The male pastor doesn’t like ethnic women, nor understand the ethnic culture, so he tells the mother that she must be lying because she is not as pretty as an Anglo-Saxon woman as in their culture, all Anglo-Saxon women must be held up as superior. The freely defame, condescend and belittle any woman, who has a demon, or who has a strong connection with God and her spirit.
When she tells her mother that she hears the voice of God, both reverends must maintain control of any “God narrative”; saying that only they can hear from God, and they preside over the situation so they so no one ever finds out and so that they can’t be sued. They lie about her mental health to have her committed. The two demon hunters convince hospital staff that she is “not herself” and that she must be disposed of into the system of hospitals and doctors because they don’t want anyone who is possessed to be near them or their children. They revel in having a sick member of the church on whom to heap scorn. Torn between people who believe that depression is caused by demons and not rape, and people who believe the two demon hunters about her, the demon hunters hide their obsession with demons from family, the authorities and hospital staff.
Following the style of “Boy Erased” and “Gay Conversion Therapy”, this woman is the first one to fight back against systemic church abuse of people who are gay, depressed or abused and the system of denying medical treatment while demons are cast out and medical treatment is seen as a last option and not a first option, this results in people refusing chemotherapy, expensive medical treatments (they all must know the state of each member’s finances) with treatment only sought after God has not answered prayers.
Taking them to court, has them indicted and takes their houses to pay for brain damage, loss of income and reputational damage in the community. She helps to change the system of laws that permits church staff, and in-house lay people and counsellors with no medical or legal education, to commit people, or call ambulances on problematic church members and their family members. All troublemakers are put on notice, they are gaslit, called disparaging names, diagnosed with demeaning conditions, because if they become too much trouble, they can just call an ambulance and say that they wanted to take their life.
In a case similar to forcing gender assignment and forcing gay conversion therapy, the protagonist fights so that other people can choose “secular treatment for depression” and not to have endless prayer sessions to “cast out demons,” refusal of medical treatment, and to be demonised and othered by the church system. Until now, the church system always wins.
